History

The Professional Exchange Service Corporation (PESC) has an interesting history. In the 1970s, some physicians decided they needed a reliable answering and paging service for the medical community in Fresno, California. So, the Fresno-Madera Medical Society launched an in-house answering and paging service.

In 1977, the Internal Revenue Service revoked the Medical Society’s non-profit status because the answering and paging service was generating too much non-dues revenue. It took 3 years for the Medical Society to settle the matter with the IRS. The IRS agreed to restore the Medical Society’s non-profit status if the Medical Society divested itself of the answering and paging service.

PESC was incorporated on April 10, 1980. Each of the doctors who were using the answering and paging service received 1 share of stock for $1.00. At the time of incorporation, PESC had more than 800 physician, dentist, and pharmacist shareholders.

Cynthia Downing was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of PESC in 1994. She expanded and diversified the business. PESC began offering association management and website services throughout California and Nevada. The company continued to grow and prosper.

In November, 2002, Cynthia and Tom Downing, DDS, purchased a majority of the outstanding shares of common stock and become majority shareholders. In late 2008, the Downings and Matt Haas purchased the remainder of the outstanding shares.

PESC operates the Telephone Exchange, the largest answering and paging service in the San Joaquin Valley. The Exchange provides answering and paging service for the medical community. It also provides information and referral services, alarm monitoring and emergency dispatching, event registration, customer service, and outbound promotional calls.

PESC is also an association management company serving business and professional trade associations, political action committees, and non-profit organizations. Services include bookkeeping and accounting; maintenance of membership databases; dues renewal invoicing; fund raising and development of non-dues revenues; coordination of board meetings, agendas, and minutes; production and distribution of printed and electronic newsletters and Email communications; strategic planning; clerical and administrative staff support; and conference and event planning.

PESC develops and maintains websites; sets up and administers online credit card processing and event registration; builds intranets to automate manual processes; and uses technology to meet clients' unique needs.
